Once a fortnight, Alex Barck of Jazzanova and Sonar Kollectiv hosts Worldwide Berlin, a dynamic and unique window into Berlin’s music and nightlife.
On the 7th of November he was joined by Henrik Schwarz, the former house and techno DJ turned classical composer. Alex and Henrick discuss his impressive career as an electronic musician and producer and explores why he turned in his decks and began to foray into the minimal, classical and jazz world.

Writer and comedian Stewart Lee joined Guardian music and culture journalist Kate Hutchinson on her monthly show. Lee took some time away from his show Content Provider at the Leicester Square Theatre to discuss the most significant records in his life and the colourful stories associated with them, from songs that remind him of Edinburgh fringe to touring with post-punk band The Nightingales, plus the music he’s discovered on his extensive travels to New Mexico, Montreal and Melbourne.

In November, host Spencer welcomed Jennie Cashman, founder of the Abram Wilson Foundation, onto the Church of Sound monthly show. The Abram Wilson Foundation does invaluable work with young people, inspiring and aiding them to become better versions of themselves through music. This month saw CoS follow a more ambient path than previous shows, connecting the dots between jazz and minimal.

Global Roots: Thris Tian with Slow Thai (Live) // 10-11-17

Northampton rapper and producer Slowthai, along with Mike Servito, Dreems and Kate Magic, joined Thris Tian on his Global Roots show – exploring the top tiers of underground music every Friday afternoon. Slowthai has been gaining consistent traction online and recently released the I Wish I Knew EP on Skinny Macho’s Bone Soda label in 2017, impressing grime-lovers with his old-school delivery, hard-hitting urban themes and gritty production.

Global Roots: Thris Tian with A Guy Called Gerald // 24-11-17

The second excerpt from Global Roots to make it into November’s Top 10, this time featuring UK dance royalty A Guy Called Gerald, who joined Thris Tian in the latter half of the month. Gerald Simpson (A Guy Called Gerlad) is credited as one of the Manchurian founding fathers of the acid house movement, both as a solo artists and through his early work, as a member of 808 State. Pitchfork magazine cited his 1995 album Black Secret Technology as a candidate for ‘the best jungle album ever’.

Brownswood Basement in Tokyo: Viva Sherry (Live) // 02-11-17

The first of multiple Brownswood Basement highlights, this time taking Stoke Newington to Japan. November 2nd saw Akiko Kiyami, Dimitri From Paris and Alex From Tokyo, Seimei and Carpainter from Trekkie and DJ Kenji Hasegawa join Gilles’ live at the WIRED HOTEL ASASUKA. Despite Worldwide FM featuring a wide variety of Japanese content, it was the first time that Brownswood Basement had been taken to the realms of Tokyo.

Brownswood Basement: Moonchild (Live) // 23-11-17

The penultimate Brownswood Basement show of the month proved to be one of the greatest, with LA neo-soul trio Moonchild performing a live set in the Basement. Making waves since their debut album Please Rewind in 2014, their recent release on Tru Thoughts, Voyager, is one of the most engaging records of 2017. The trio, comprised of Amber Navran, Max Bryk and Andris Mattson, have a sound which subtly alludes to The Internet and Hiatus Kaiyote, yet unforgettably distinctive.

Brownswood Basement: Gilles Peterson in conversation with Leroy Burgess // 10-11-17

Few artists have shaped the sound of disco, both through solo work and collaboration, in the same way as Leroy Burgess. The singer, songwriter, instrumentalist and record producer has continued to craft top range disco cuts for the over 30 years, especially as a former member of Black Ivory in the 1970s. On a tour to London with the J.A.W Family, Leroy stepped into the Brownswood Basement, alongside John Morales and disco DJ Red Greg, to speak to Gilles about his musical journey.

Once a month the London-based South African Dj and producer Esa, has graced the Worldwide FM controls, with his eclectic show which presents the sounds from his expanding travels. Back in November Esa linked up with the rising Dutch producer Niels Nieubord to discuss his latest ‘Nos Majia’ release on the acclaimed Rush Hour. The Rotterdam producer went on to discuss and transcend the ideas about his experimentation in multi-sensory art forms and introduce the ideas around his experience with making music in foreign realms.

Classic Album Sundays: Fela Kuti – Zombie and Gentleman // 26-11-17

Worldwide family member Colleen ‘Cosmo’ Murphy has been condensing her iconic Classic Album Sundays series into a wonderful podcast form. With such a deep and expansive knowledge, her in-depth studies into culture-shaping albums have included the like of Michael Jackson’s Off The Wall and D’Angelo’s seductive Vodoo. In November though, we were treated to a double offering, two albums from afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti. Gentleman, which was released in 1973 and Zombie, 1976, are considered two landmark works for Kuti and emphasise the Nigerians refusal to bow down to the industry’s preference of 3 minute tracks.
