    Stuck in Brownswood Basement with over 50,000 records in his collection, Gilles Peterson uses his time in lockdown to explore deep into the crates and round up ‘The 20’ favourite songs across the WWFM’s most celebrated genres. ⁠ ⁠ This week’s focus is folk funk. Gilles defines folk funk as the music that came to the clubs in the late 80’s as a continuation of rare groove. A new door was opened that would lead some of you to drop more cosmic stuff radio and turn tunes like ‘golden ring’ by American Gypsy’ into the new ‘cross the tracks!’ And when the trip hop generation came along and found new breaks and samples and discovered people like Sunforest or Doris ‘you never come closer!’ As always there was also a strong jazz feel in a lot of them – plenty of waltzes!

  • 28.04.21 WW Detroit: DJ Dez Andres

    World Famous DJ Dez aka Dez Andrés takes over this weeks WW Detroit. The son of Humberto ‘Nengue’ Hernandez, a world renown percussionist, he got his first drum set at the age of three. While hanging out in Amp Fiddler’s home studio, he met J Dilla, who recruited him to DJ for his hiphop group Slum Village. Parallel to revolutionizing the U.S. rap landscape with the new-found electrified smoothness of S-Villa, Dez Andrés went on to explore his hometown’s house legacy from the late 90’s onwards and released a string of 12-inches on KDJ. He later released three acclaimed full-length albums for Mahogani Music, which put him on the map as one of the most versatile figures in dance music. In 2012, Dez Andrés inaugurated his own La Vida label with the future classic “New For You,” which became one of the decade’s most delectable dance floor cuts, selling out multiple pressings. In the years since that release, Dez has never slowed down and has made it clear that he’s a vital part of the musical landscape, and Detroit’s musical lineage.

Rebecca is joined by DJ Format for a chat about his forthcoming album with an first time exclusive play, plus her own single forthcoming on Rebecca’s records, plus Scottish hip hop DJ and producer nasty P delivers an amazing guest mix filled with hip hop from the 90s.

  • 27.04.21 Atiyyah Khan presents Future Nostalgia Collective

    South African music journalist, DJ, and researcher Atiyyah Khan (El Corazon) digs out gems, past and present. The show is an extension of the music collective she co-founded in Cape Town called Future Nostalgia, which has hosted listening sessions in the city for the past eight years. For the first time ever, the Future Nostalgia Collective – including Atiyyah, Grant Jurius (Futurist) and Graeme Arendse (Boeta G) – take an in-depth retrospective look back at eight years of their existence hosting listening sessions in South Africa. As a space to gather and rooted in the ideals of community and listening together, they look back at their humble beginnings in jazz club, The Mahogany Room back in 2013. Together they discuss their history and evolution in sound, including paying tribute to important figures that contributed to growing their community over the years. They also select some tunes representative of the Future Nostalgia sound.

Her first book, ‘Energy Never Dies: Afro-Optimism and Creativity in Chicago’, will be released in November by University of Illinois Press. Junius Paul is a record collector, DJ, and bassist. He plays bass for Art Ensemble of Chicago and Makaya McCraven. Junius released an album on Chicago record label International Anthem titled ISM in November of 2019.
