Unfold: Japan is a celebration of the many innovative strands of Japanese club culture with Asahi Super Dry beer. Colleen ‘Cosmo’ Murphy unfolds a different sound across four shows, with expert guests dropping in for interviews, live sessions and DJ sets.

For the 4th and the last episode, we will be exploring ‘Disco to dub’ with Kiko Hitomi, sauce81, François K and Sami-T (Mighty Crown).

Kiki Hitomi (WaqWaq Kingdom)

Kiki Hitomi is the singer/songwriter from bass explores King Midas Sound(Ninja Tune), Black Chow and was founding member of the Japanese Dubstep duo Dokkebi Q.

Her highly acclaimed solo debut album “Karma No Kusari” appeared on Jahtari in 2016 and is roaming the galaxies ever since.

Apart from her own solo project Kiki is half of WaqWaq Kingdom, a Japanese tribal bass duo consisting of Kiki and Shigeru Ishihara (A.K.A DJ Scotch Egg). Their genre and time bending sound is like a psychedelic Nabe hot pot: melting Japanese traditional style Minyo with Jamaican dancehall, footwork, dub, techno, tribal polyrhythms and Super Nintendo soundtracks.

Sauce 81

Sauce81 is a producer/composer/singer aka N’gaho Ta’quia / 77 Karat Gold.

With raw beats, warm and ruff synth, rugged instrumentation and soulful vocals, sauce81 brings deep funkness into his machine grooves. After releasing singles and remixes on various labels, his two 7inch singles “Natural Thing” and “Dance Tonight” on Alexander Nut & Floating Point’s consistently excellent label Eglo Records gained a lot of attention worldwide. He also dropped the album “In The Pocket” under his N’gaho Ta’quia alias, as an homage to his musical roots from the 70’s funk, soul, jazz music and blaxploitation movie soundtracks, with psychedelic synth sounds and soulful vibes driven by dirty fat beats. Took part in Red Bull Music Academy 2008 Barcelona and performed at Sonar Sound Tokyo, Do Over, 5 Years of Boiler Room, Rainbow Disco Club, Wonderfruit and many other music festivals, events touring worldwide. SOICHI TERADA × KUNIYUKI × SAUCE81 Live Session at Rainbow Disco Club(JP), ADE 2018(NL), Warehouse Project(UK), Japan Connection(FR) has been an epic performance showing new possibilities for electronic/dance-music performers to jam with each other on machines.

Also known as 1/2 of 77 Karat Gold: a collaboration project with Grooveman Spot on Jazzy Sport. In 2015 they delivered a package with their diverse styles of electronic funk and groove science in their debut album “WANNAFUNKWITU”. The latest project “S8102” with Shing02 is a sci-fi space trip soundtrack.
His funky and soulful machine live set triggering beats, looping synth, bass, keys and singing over the tracks, and mixing the songs like a DJ is a special one to check out.

François K

Quite simply one of the world’s most famous club DJs and Producers, François has been visiting and sampling the culture of Japan for over 20 years and sells out shows in Tokyo and beyond. His monthly show “World of Echoes” is 3rd Tuesdays 15.00-19.00 on Worldwide FM.

Sami-T (Mighty Crown)

Mighty Crown, also known as the Far East Rulaz, was founded in 1991 by friends from Yokohama, Japan. Mighty Crown gradually got their fame by playing at clubs and by selling self-produced mix tapes throughout Japan. After building their sound system (movable speaker boxes) in 1994, they started clashing with other Japanese sound systems and became the undisputed and undefeated sound clash champion in Japan (1998). Since then, they have been influencing and leading the whole dancehall scene in Japan.

They have won several soundclashes in Jamaica and have toured internationally. Most recently they inked a deal with Nike to market a Mighty Crown shoe, have their own clothing line and continue to be a part of the Irish and Chin crew. Made up of 4 members, including co-founders and brothers Masta Simon and Sami T, along with Ninja and Cojie, the sound has dominated the sound clash and juggling arenas, providing fans with a high level of Reggae Dancehall entertainment.

Shuya Okino (Kyoto Jazz Massive)

DJ / Creative director of KYOTO JAZZ MASSIVE / Music writer
Since forming “Kyoto Jazz Massive” as a DJ unit in the beginning of 90’s, Shuya and his posse have built up a jazz / club crossover music scene in Japan, and have successful careers overseas. In 2000, Kyoto Jazz Massive signed to Compost Records in Germany and in 2006 Shuya Okino released his acclaimed solo album “UNITED LEGENDS”. He has written a book and is currently working on another on the subject of DJing in the Club Jazz scene. Shuya Okino continues to be a hugely important figure in the Crossover/Jazz scene worldwide – he has a weekly show called “Jazz ain’t Jazz” on InterFM897, the prominent Japanese FM station, and “WW Kyoto” 2nd Mondays 11:00-13:00 (GMT) on Worldwide FM.
