Classic Album Sundays: LCD Soundsystem’s Sound of Silver

10.06.18

Founded by radio host, music producer, label owner and journalist, Colleen “Cosmo” Murphy, Classic Album Sundays allows listeners to fully immerse themselves into an album by exploring its context, the making of and a full replay of the album on vinyl. This edition focuses on Sound of Silver, the second studio album by American rock band LCD Soundsystem.

On its release in 2007 under Capitol Records, Sound of Silver garnered universal acclaim. The Guardian, dubbing it “dance-rock for grown-ups: extraordinary”.

LCD Soundsystem, and the project’s mastermind James Murphy, honed the dance-punk exuberance of their first, self-titled album of 2005, blending dance and rock music in a way few have managed to do successfully. Sound of Silver is an album as honest and raw in emotion as it is intelligent and masterful in execution, and the results appealed to fans from all over the musical map.

After years of DJing and producing records, Murphy released Sound of Silver at the age of 36; His experience reinforced the album’s poignancy. At its heart was the dynamic, anthemic track ‘All My Friends.’ which was covered at the time by everyone from Franz Ferdinand to John Cale, and in 2009, Pitchfork deemed it the second best song of the decade. Meanwhile, Sound of Silver as a whole earned a Grammy nod for Best Electronic/Dance Album and would later turn up on RS’ 500 Greatest Albums of All Time list.
