Makoto
Makoto Shimizu, more widely known simply as ‘Makoto’, is a testament to the international scope and power of electronic music and he is one of the few DJ/producer who made a success outside of Japan with Drum’n’Bass music. Clubbing icon LTJ Bukem signed him to Good Looking Records imprint in 1999 and after his 2nd Album “Believe In My Soul” Makoto began to release music for other labels such as DJ Zinc‘s Bingo Beats, London Elektricity‘s Hospital Records, Fabio‘s Creative Source and of course, the legendary DJ Marky‘s Innerground Records. His musical connection with Brazil’s DJ Marky runs deep, and was solidified with his very own release on Marky’s label in 2009 titled “DJ Marky & Friends presents Makoto”. The pair went on to collaborate and release a number of tracks together. He has toured across Asia, Europe, UK and USA, and most recently Makoto has been busy living in London, releasing on leading imprint Hospital Records to whom he signed in 2017, and setting up his own label – HE:Digital.
Daisuke Tanabe
As a Red Bull Music Academy graduate and originally coming from a techno/breakbeat background, Daisuke has developed his own style of production to create a distinctive sound between Drum’n’Bass hiphop, electronica, folk and jazz. During his time in the UK, his track was chosen on a Brownswood label compilation, as well as some of the leading lights in the UK breakbeat scene. Beyond Japan, he has toured across the UK, Europe, Southeast Asia, India and Australia. He is a remix master and has worked for wide range of high profile musicians including the UK’s Poppy Ackroyd. He also produces sounds for theatre performances and installations.
Lefto
DJ/ Crurator/ Radio DJ
Tastemaker of Belgium and beyond. Described by Fact! Magazine “your favourite dj’s favourite dj”, affiliated with Brownswood Recordings, Blue Note, !K7 Records, and one the most important tastemakers Europe has to offer. Lefto is consistently a couple steps ahead of your average early adopter, and is one of Mixcloud’s highest performing DJs, with 580 shows on Belgium’s foremost national radio station Studio Brussel under his belt. Firmly rooted in jazz and hip hop, he sharpened his digging sensibility working at the now legendary Music Mania record store in hometown Brussels. His weekly show “Early Bird with Lefto” is Wednesdays 11-13.00.
Shuya Okino (Kyoto Jazz Massive)
DJ / Creative director of KYOTO JAZZ MASSIVE / Music writer
Since forming “Kyoto Jazz Massive” as a DJ unit in the beginning of 90’s, Shuya and his posse have built up a jazz / club crossover music scene in Japan, and have successful careers overseas. In 2000, Kyoto Jazz Massive signed to Compost Records in Germany and in 2006 Shuya Okino released his acclaimed solo album “UNITED LEGENDS”. He has written a book and is currently working on another on the subject of DJing in the Club Jazz scene. Shuya Okino continues to be a hugely important figure in the Crossover/Jazz scene worldwide – he has a weekly show called “Jazz ain’t Jazz” on InterFM897, the prominent Japanese FM station, and “WW Kyoto” 2nd Mondays 11:00-13:00 (GMT) on Worldwide FM.
