2. Soundspecies & Ache Meyi – Alina’s Calypso [Manana Records] // UK

In 2016 Manana launched Cuba’s first ever electronic music festival, celebrating the country’s furtive music culture, with more of a focus on second city Santiago. While the festival is on hiatus, Manana continues its mission statement as a label. Following a release from Ariwo – deep club sounds combined with Yelfris Valdes’ powerful trumpet work – Soundspecies and Ache Meyi released their own self-titled album. The Brownswood Bubblers Four alumni apply their own electronic production techniques to the Afro-Cuban energy of Ache Meyi for a raucous showcase.

4. Maia Barouh – Flute improvisation (Live WWFM Performance)

In Thris Tian’s absence, Worldwide FM producer Mari hosted a Japan special for her first New Music Worldwide show. Among the guests were techno producers DJ Nobu and Haruka, music journalist Yuko Asanuma with a Tokyo-via-Berlin selection and the first edition of Yosi Horikawa’s field recording show, following his adventures with us and Tank in New Orleans. Despite all this talent, it was Japanese-French singer-songwriter Maia Barouh, daughter of Pierre Barouh, founder of Sarava Records who stole the show, with a live flute improvisation.

Tribute of the Month

6. Marcus Intalex – Temperance [Soul-R] // UK

At the end of May, the drum & bass and techno community was dealt a heavy blow with the untimely death of Marcus ‘Intalex’ Kaye. Through his own productions and running the Soul:r and Revolve:r imprints, he’d enjoyed a long and fruitful career forming the UK club sounds across nearly two decades. While there was no special tribute show on air, numberous hosts picked out some favourites from his extensive discography during their shows.

Moments of the Month

7. Novelist freestyle over Skream’s Midnight Request Line [Unreleased] // UK

In an effort to represent an under celebrated but highly influential musical region of London, Emma Warren presented a four hour WW Lewisham special, covering the full spectrum of the borough’s sounds. Saxon looked back on dub heritage, Emma Jean Thackray represented the new jazz energy of the Trinity School, Coby Sey covered brooding electronics and Fotomachine bridged the gaps between them all. The appearance of grime mc Novelist stood out most, not just for the impact of craft but also the manner in which he expressed it. A true ambassador for his local area, he showed an acute awareness of the responsibility he has to his young contemporaries; and rather than cowering, he relishes the role. His freestyle bridged two decades of UK club culture, laying his own new verses over one of Skream’s iconic dubstep productions.

▹ Explore more: Coby Sey took part in a Whities takeover, hosted by Tasker. (09-02-17)

8. Juana Molina – Cosoco [CRAMMED DISCS] // Argentina

As a singer, songwriter and actress, Juana Molina is somewhat of a superstar in her native Argentina but in Europe she enjoys a bit more of unassuming existence. That was until the release of her critically acclaimed seventh album Halo on Crammed Discs in May, an enigmatic combination of ambient, experimental pop, psychedelics and progressive folk. She joined Brownswood’s Jake From Upstairs for an interview about her craft.

10. JMSN – Addicted [WWFM Live Version] // US

So devoted is our LA studio to showcasing live music, they often pack more live music into their schedule every month than we do in London; and they’re only on six hours a week. This month’s highlight came from LA-via-Detroit singer Christian Berishaj. Better known as JMSN, his newly released fifth album, Whatever Makes You Happy, celebrates living a life of self-fulfilment and joy. ‘Addicted’ is taken from the release and was performed live on Jeremy Sole’s Branches show alongside four other tracks.
