Classic Album Sundays: Terri Lyne Carrington on Nina Simone

01.12.19

Founded by radio host, music producer, label owner and journalist, Colleen “Cosmo” Murphy, Classic Album Sundays allows listeners to fully immerse themselves into an album by exploring its context, the making of and a full replay of the album on vinyl. This month’s album is Nina Simone’s ‘Black Gold’ presented by Terri Lyne Carrington in conversation with Colleen ‘Cosmo’ Murphy at EFG London Jazz Festival.

Terri is interviewed on her love of the album and why it has endured as a masterpiece. This will be followed by a full playback of the album on our audiophile soundsystem.

Terri is a legendary American drummer, composer, singer, and producer who has worked with the likes of Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Dianne Reeves and Esperanza Spalding amongst others.

She will be taking up residence over the first weekend of the festival in Kings Place, as part of their Venus Unwrapped series, in what will be her first EFG London Jazz festival appearance since 2016.

Her outfit, Social Science in her own words ‘.. was born from a need to express the emotions and thoughts about where we are socially, historically, politically, and spiritually. This alternative jazz band reflects a contemporary/post-modern view on music’ . It is an eclectic stylistic blend, borrowing from jazz, indie rock, contemporary classical, hip hop, and free improvisation. It’s jazz for the eclectic listener, reflecting the musical and social atmosphere of today.
