Kate Hutchinson with Zach Schonfeld: The Story Of 24 Carat Black11.12.20
Monthly show from Kate Hutchinson, Guardian music and culture journalist, broadcaster and DJ from London. She is also the former Clubbing Editor at Time Out and is still waiting impatiently for the fidget-house revival.
This month Kate is joined by journalist and author Zach Schonfeld, who has written a volume in the esteemed 33 1/3 series dedicated to forgotten funk heroes 24 Carat Black. They’re the band behind one of the most sampled records in hip-hop, Ghetto: Misfortune’s Wealth, including by Jay-Z, Kendrick Lamar, Digable Planets and Busta Rhymes, but they have largely faded into obscurity until now.
Find out about what happened to 24 Carat Black and this lost classic, as well as more about, as Schonfeld puts it in his book, “the mercurial currents of the 1970s soul scene, the artistic and legal dimensions of sampling, the creative limits placed on Black ambition in the Nixon era, as well as thornier notions of exploitation and cultural rebirth” in this special in-conversation. ’24-Carat Black’s Ghetto: Misfortune’s Wealth’ by Zach Schonfeld is out now.Listen now Tracklist
