September 2016 marked the launch of Worldwide FM, a new global music radio platform founded by Gilles Peterson as an addition to his taste-making Worldwide brand. Broadcasting live from London, 10AM-6PM on weekdays, Worldwide FM is co-curated by Thris Tian, with satellite studios in Los Angeles and Tokyo.

Gilles Peterson presents the Worldwide FM Top Ten for May – a monthly chart of ten tracks that sum up Gilles’ favourite moments on the station, including music player, guest appearances, interviews, tributes and special broadcasts.

Nubya Garcia – Hold (Alternate Take) [Jazz:Refreshed] // UK

The young saxophonist is one of the ringleaders in an exciting new generation of jazz musicians in London. After becoming known on the circuit for her work in bands like Collocutor, Nérija, Maisha and the Theon Cross Trio, this year marks the launch of her own band, which reads like a who’s who of the best young talent in London: Moses Boyd and Femi Koleoso on drums, Daniel Casimir on double bass and Joe Armon-Jones on piano. This coincides with the release of her debut album, Nubya’s 5ive, on Jazz Re:freshed, from which ‘Hold (Alternative Take)’ is lifted from.

2 . WaqWaq Kingdom – Oh It’s Good [Jahtari] // Japan

Waq Waq Kingdom is a Japanese cyber dub crew made up of DJ Scotch Egg and Kiko Hitomi, a vocalist who fuses reggae, ’50s pop and UK bass styles. ‘Oh It’s Good’ is taken from their new album, Shinsekai, named after an old neighbourhood in Osaka, built in 1912 and modelled on New York and Paris.

Collocutor – Arrival (WWFM Live Version) // UK

Like Nubya, Tamar Osborne is another London saxophonist riding the wave of the city’s current jazz resurgence who, since graduating from Guildhall in 2000, has become one of the UK’s most accomplished multi-wind specialists. Her seven-piece band, Collocutor, just released The Search LP, their second for London-based On The Corner Records, from which ‘Arrival’ is taken. Influences range from Indian classical, Ethiopian, polyphonic choral, minimalism and afrobeat, informed by Tamar’s experiences as part of the FELA! production at The National Theatre and member of Dele Sosimi’s Afrobeat Orchestra.

Galorn – Arrest Under Special Powers [Disques Velia] // France
taken from Andy Votel’s Niche Market Vol.1

The way Gilles came bounding through the door one morning with Andy Votel’s first Niche Market volume in his possession, we knew he’d come onto something special. This new series allows the Finders Keepers Records boss to dig deep into ultra-obscure territories, but he presents it in a way that’s both humorous, informative and accessible. The first episode focussed on Breton Jazz and had Gilles grabbing what he could on Discogs as each was played. His pick from the 30 minute show was ‘Arrest Under Special Powers’ by 70’s progressive folk band Galorn.

Ptôse – In Your Bush (Edit) [Ayaa] // France
taken from Motor City Drum Ensemble’s first monthly show

Danilo Plessow a.k.a Motor City Drum Ensemble is on a constant mission to discover new sounds. Drawing from an impressive record collection, the celebrated DJ and producer shares some of the music that inspires him, as part of a new monthly show called The State of Rhythm. For his first outing, Danilo sat down with Brazilian jazz-funk legends Azymuth for an interview. Gilles’ standout track was from 80’s French, synth punk band Ptôse, which Danilo picked out for its reverence to house and accentuated further with his own edit of the original.

Azymuth – Montreux [Milestone Records] // Brazil
taken from Joe Davis’s Ivan Conti ‘Mamao’ fundraiser show

As boss of Far Out Recordings, Joe Davis has been releasing Azymuth’s music since 1996. Therefore, when their drummer Ivan Conti ‘Mamao’ took a tumble backstage, Joe led a fundraising campaign to raise money for a much-needed operation (which you can still donate to here). ‘Montreux’ is taken from Azymuth’s 1983 album Rapid Transit.

Philip Cohran & the Artistic Heritage Ensemble – The Minstrel [Aestuarium Records] // USA
taken from Gilles’ 90th birthday tribute to Philip Cohran

A leader of the spiritual jazz movement, Philip Cohran is best known for his time playing trumpet for the Sun Ra Arkestra and leader of The Artistic Heritage Ensemble. He was also somewhat of a mentor for Maurice White and his brothers, guiding them pre-Earth Wind and Fire, while he also fathers eight of the nine members of Hypnotic Brass Ensemble. A figure who has influenced many different generations of jazz musicians, Gilles celebrated his 90th birthday with a two hour tribute show. His pick is taken from Philip’s 1967 album On The Beach.

Os Bongos – Kazucuta (Batida Remix) [Self Released] // Portugal, taken from Tash_LC’s interview with Batida

Born in Huambo, Angola and raised in the suburbs of Lisbon, Batdia’s work as a leading DJ and producer in Portugal is deeply informed by the country’s immigrant community. Releases on Soundway and Crammed Discs, as well as affiliations to Lisbon crew Pricipe have helped him become a unifying force of his hometown’s multi-faceted music culture; Tash_LC’s in-depth interview went some way to explore how he approaches such a role. The musical standout from this session is a one of Batida’s own remixes, harking back to the golden age of Angolan music.

WW NOLA Moments

As part of a collaboration with Six of Saturns festival at Ace Hotel’s Three Keys venue,, we curated 11 special broadcasts across 11 days live from New Orleans. Gilles Peterson, Mark de Clive-Lowe, Brice Nice and Soul Sista all hosted and were joined by a range of guests, including Bill Summers, Taylor McFerrin, Maurice Brown, Tank and the Bangas and Yosi Horikawa.

Kutiman and Princess Shaw – Falling [Not on Label] // Israel

Princess Shaw (Samantha Montgomery) was a nurse from New Orleans who was discovered by Israeli musician Kutiman (Ophir Kutiel) whilst he was trawling Youtube. They’re now recording music together and there’s a documentary online about the unlikely pairing called Thru You Princess.

Tank and the Bangas – QUICK (WWFM Live Version) // USA

Tank and the Bangas are one of the most exciting bands coming out of New Orleans at the moment. Recent winners of the 2017 NPR Tiny Desk Contest, their live set on WW NOLA was faultlessly tight and full of energy.
