Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide FM Top 10 – Best of April 2017

September 2016 marked the launch of Worldwide FM, a new global music radio platform founded by Gilles Peterson as an addition to his taste-making Worldwide brand. Broadcasting live from London, 10AM-6PM on weekdays, Worldwide FM is co-curated by Thris Tian, with satellite studios in Los Angeles and Tokyo.

Gilles Peterson presents the Worldwide FM Top Ten for April – a monthly chart of ten tracks that sum up Gilles’ favourite moments on the station, including music player, guest appearances, interviews, tributes and special broadcasts.

Track of the Month:

1 – Nick Hakim – Green Twins [ATO Records] // USA

A soulful, psychedelic ride from East Coast singer-songwriting Nick Hackim, taken from his forthcoming album Green Twins out 19th May on ATO Records.

Album of the Month:

2 – Lord Echo – Just Do You, taken from Harmonies [Soundway Records] // New Zealand

Reggae, rock steady, disco, African soul and spiritual jazz combine on this wide-ranging and accomplished album from New Zealand producer Lord Echo on Soundway.

3 – Jono McCleery – Angola, Louisiana [Live Worldwide FM Session] // UK

To celebrate what would have been Gil Scott-Heron’s 68th Birthday, The Invisible bandleader Dave Okumu presented a two hour show, accompanied by poet Lemn Sissay MBE and Ninja Tune-signed singer-songwriter Jono McCleery. Aside from playing some of their favourite originals, Jono also performed a live cover of ‘Angola, Louisiana’, taken from Secrets, a collaborative album with Brian Jackson from 1978.

4 – Bugge Wesseltoft & Prins Thomas – Bobletekno [Live Worldwide FM Session] // Norway

As part of our weekly International Day takeovers, Norwegian pianist Bugge Wesseltoft hosted a four hour broadcast with two of Norway’s most influential and longest-standing DJs, Strangefruit and Olle Abstract, alongside space-disco originator Prins Thomas. ‘Bobletekno’ is taken from a world exclusive live jam that Bugge and Thomas did at the beginning of the show.

5 – Laura Misch – This Road [Live WWFM Session] // UK

Young London saxophonist, singer and producer Laura Misch joined Emma Warren’s show for a live set, mastering three instruments (including her voice) at once. ‘This Road’ is currently unreleased.

6 – Penguin Cafe & Cornelius – Bird Watching At Inner Forest (Penguin Cafe Mix) [Erased Tapes] // UK

To celebrate 10 years in the game, avant-garde classic label Erased Tapes took over the Brownswood Basement for a four hour broadcastLabel founder Robert Rath looked back on some of their favourite releases and presented two special live sets, one from Penguin Cafe and the other a world exclusive performance from Daniel Bradt, co-founder of Germany’s electroacoustic ensemble Brandt Brauer Frick.

7 – Nia Andrews – From Here [Live Worldwide Festival Session] // USA

We broadcasted a four hour highlight show from Gilles’ annual alpine festival in Leysin. Nia Andrews’ live set was one of the highlights, especially this title track of her 2016 From Here EP.

8 – Slowthai – T’n’Biscuits [Bone Soda] // UK

On the tip from Thris Tian, Slowthai is a Northampton-based wordsmith and producer, recently signed to Skinny Macho’s Bone Soda imprint. This one is taken from his slowitdown EP and was featured heavily on Thris’ New Music Worldwide shows, which you can catch weekly on Fridays 2-6PM BST.

9 – Osunlade – Same, Same [Yoruba 45s] // USA

Osunlade is one of the house music greats as both a DJ, producer, label boss with Yoruba Records and now band conductor with the Yoruba Soul Orchestra. Not content with his current lot, he’s recently set up a new offshoot label, Yoruba 45s, dedicated to 7” releases. Packed with a Prince-like funk to it, ‘Same, Same’ is taken from its first release.

10 – Nicholas Payton – Jazz Is A Four Letter Word [Paytone-Ropeadope] // USA

Deep and soulful jazz explorations fromAmerican trumpet player and multi-instrumentalist, Nicholas Payton. A New Orleans native, this links neatly onto our 10-day WW NOLA broadcast live from Six of Saturns Jazz Fest at Ace Hotel and in partnership with WeTransfer.
