Gilles Peterson presents a weekly show from the iconic Brownswood Basement. This week features an interview with the legend that is Norman Jay MBE, a mix from Phonox’s resident rising star HAAi and a live session from up and coming jazzers Vels Trio.

Vels Trio

Vels Trio are the amalgamation of three of London’s very best jazz musicians. The trio is born out of collective obsession, emotion and improvisation to sculpt contagiously frenetic compositions. They released their debut EP Yellow Ochre in June.

John Cumming OBE

Head of programming and founder of Serious, a role that oversees the overall programming of the EFG London Jazz Festival and the Barbican Jazz series. John Cumming received an OBE for services to jazz in 2013.

Future Bubblers

Amy from Future Bubblers joins Gilles to chat about the new compilation.

HAAi

Resident at Brixton’s Phonox and now producing and releasing tracks of her own through her Coconut Beats label. HAAi continues to grow as a producer, DJ and label head.

Rodney P

UK Hip Hop and radio legend, Rodney P recently hosted a BBC documentary looking into the groundbreaking London radio stations of the 80s. He joins Gilles to discuss his career and The Last Pirates: Britain’s Rebel DJs.

Charlotte Gainsbourg

Daughter of French cultural royalty Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin, vocalist Charlotte Gainsbourg has made herself a name in her own right with her fusion of fragile vocals and heavy electro beats.

Norman Jay

Norman Jay is one of the most respected and popular DJs in the world. Co-founder of the legendary Good Times Sound System and London dance music station KISS FM, Jay fostered the ‘Rare Groove’ scene pushing the boundaries of the UK’s emerging club culture.
