
Ryuichi Sakamoto with Gilles Peterson
17.01.19Ryuichi Sakamoto is a Japanese musician, singer, composer, record producer, activist, writer, and co-founder of Yellow Magic Orchestra (YMO).
He is respected as one of the pioneers of synth pop and electronic music, which helped to cultivate Japanese music. Along with the international success that came with YMO, Sakamoto has also written Oscar winning film-score and made international collaborations with likes of David Sylvan and Alva Noto.
In 2018, RYUICHI SAKAMOTO: CODA, the documentary film about Sakamoto himself, both the artist and the man was released. Gilles Peterson had a chance to sit down with Sakamoto and to have an in depth conversation about his musical history and his feelings about the world today.
This 2-hour special show features a special interview; as well as, words and music from 2 musicians who are deeply influenced by Sakamoto: Ski Oakenfull and Ola Szmidt.
2019 marks the 40th anniversary of “Solid State Survivor” (1979), one of the most acclaimed albums of Yellow Magic Orchestra, and the 20th anniversary of “BTTB” (1999), Sakamoto’s Piano solo album.

Ski Oakenfull
Ski Oakenfull is an Artist, Keyboard player, Producer, Remixer and Composer living in London. Having started his career with The K-Creative who were signed to Gilles Peterson’s Talkin’ Loud label in 1991, he went on to release two solo albums, Life Changes & Rising Son, play keyboards with bands such as Galliano, Raw Stylus & Two Banks of Four, remix countless tracks and work at Xenomania. He currently releases music on his own label, Primaudial Records, writes & produces with artists such as Incognito, Joey Negro and Valerie Etienne and has an Ambient Electronic project called Ayota.
Alongside his production work, Ski holds the position of Head of Curriculum at Point Blank Music School, where he writes courses in electronic music for their BA (Hons) degree programme. He has also made over a hundred tutorial videos for the school’s YouTube channel which have racked up over six million views.
Ola Szmidt
Born in Poland, Ola Szmidt is a singer-songwriter, musician, classically trained flautist and producer based in York. She is the The Steve Reid Award winner, funded by PRSF and has been mentored by Four Tet.
Ola signed in 2018 A&R contract with Roland/ Boss UK and she is also supported by the artists team at Ableton UK. The artist produced and self-published her debut EP1 on December 1st, 2017. The record was compiled and mastered by Kieran Hebden.
She is currently completing her MA degree in “Improvised Music and Jazz” by Research at The University Of York and her next EP will be released on the 25th of January, 2019.
