Gilles Peterson with Jon Hassell
09.02.20Gilles Peterson sits down with legendary trumpet player and electronic music pioneer, Jon Hassell in the Brownswood Basement.
Jon was a close collaborator with David Byrne and Brian Eno in the early 1980s, famed for his ‘fourth world’ sound which in the 1970s and 80s was unique in merging third world tradition with first world technology.
During a hour of words and music, Jon honestly and thought-provokingly discusses that Talking Heads period and some of the regrets he has from that time, as well as his experiences working with German electronic music composer Stockhausen, his admiration for Gil Evans, his own favourite recording today, and his developed thoughts on the north vs south/ mind vs body divide, which have significantly informed the way he creates his music and lives his life.
The first ever reissue and remastering of Jon Hassell & Farafina’s prescient, “Fourth World” masterwork, co-produced with the legendary studio team of Brian Eno & Daniel Lanois, and featuring propulsive Burkinese rhythms meet revelatory, ambient soundscapes is out now on Glitterbeat records.
