QC Radio: King Hippo with Joshua Abrams, Supreme Court, Jeff Parker, Ashina

01.12.20

QC Radio is a weekly look at the creativity flowing through the City of Chicago. We’ll hear from Chicago-based musicians, DJs, record stores, journalists, labels and parties. This season is curated by broadcaster, event producer and member of the International Anthem family, King Hippo.

Today, many Chicagoans are mourning the loss of a place many considered sacred. A small candlelit bar tucked away on a residential block in the city’s Bucktown neighbourhood, a bar that stood for 34 years and whose walls were saturated with magic. Joshua Abrams, Supreme Court and Jeff Parker pay tribute to Danny’s Tavern.

Sovereign State Recordings label boss Ashina shares a mix and King Hippo closes out the show with an unreleased project which was recorded live at Danny’s featuring Isaiah Spencer on drums, Isaiah Collier on saxophone, Anton Hatwich on stand up double bass, Brent Griffin Jr. on saxophone and Jumaane Taylor tap dance.

“When traveling is made too easy and comfortable, its spiritual meaning is lost. This may be called sentimentalism, but a certain sense of loneliness engendered by traveling leads one to reflect upon the meaning of life, for life is after all a travelling from one unknown to another unknown.” – D.T. Suzuki
