Kate Hutchinson with Seun Kuti

18.05.18

Monthly show from Kate Hutchinson, Guardian music and culture journalist, broadcaster and DJ from London. She is also the former Clubbing Editor at Time Out and is still waiting impatiently for the fidget-house revival.

For her May show, Kate is joined by Seun Kuti, son of afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti and bandleader of his father’s Egypt 80 band, whose politically-charged new album Black Times honours the revolutionaries who have gone before and rallies the torch-bearers to come. He brings along a selection of the tracks that mean the most to him and speaks candidly about what it was really like growing up in Fela’s Kalakuta Republic compound, why he’ll always be a voice for the working classes, the importance of modern-day protest music and why juju master King Sunny Ade was the “Gary Barlow of Nigeria”.
