No Bass Like Home: Erica McKoy

A documentary on the history of reggae music in Brent, telling stories about significant milestones in the London borough’s cultural history and finding out why it’s considered the hub of UK reggae music.

Presenter Erica McKoy talks to figures in the area to shed light on key moments for the area. Director of the Black Music Research Unit at the University of Westminster and founder member of UK legends Steel Pulse, Mykaell Riley takes us to an early reggae festival. We hear from Trojan Records’ Chips Richards and musicians Dave Barker (The Upsetters) and Locksley Gichie of the UK’s first reggae band, The Cimarons. Daddy Ernie also joins the discussion to recount tales of early pirate radio and give a sense of what the area was like growing up.

Soundtracked by the sounds of the borough: local legends Trojan Records,The Cimarons, Aswad, Janet Kay, Matumbi, Caroll Thompson. As Daddy Ernie puts it ‘Brent for life… there’s so much talent that’s come out of Brent… it’s Incredible!’
