Brownswood Basement: Gilles Peterson with Yazmin Lacey
Track: Yazmin Lacey – Black Moon [Self Release]

Nottingham based neo-soul singer Yazmin Lacey is a year two graduate of the Future Bubblers programme and has recently undertaken a 6Music for Gilles and a Maida Vale session for Jamz Supernova. Her debut EP Black Moon was out earlier this year on Running Circle and she came down to the Brownswood Basement to perform the EP’s title track ‘Black Moon’ with her band.

Brownswood Basement: Gilles Peterson with Charlotte Gainsbourg
Track: Charlotte Gainsbourg – Rest [Because Music]

Since performing on her father’s track ‘Lemon Incest’ at 13, actor and singer Charlotte Gainsbourg has become cultural royalty. Put under the spotlight from a young age due to her famous parents (Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Berkin) she has proved her own as an actress, courting controversy and glowing reviews in films such as Lars Von Trier’s Anti-Christ and Nymphomaniac. She has now returned to music, releasing the Rest LP in November, her fourth album and first in seven years.

She joined Gilles in the Brownswood Basement for his weekly show to discuss her many projects. In this section she discusses, ‘Songbird In A Cafe,’ her collaboration with Paul McCartney on the new album. After that you’ll hear the title track Rest.

Open Library: DJ Deep
Track: King Errisson – Space Queen [Venture Records]

Aside from heading up the label Deeply Rooted, French techno and house producer Cyril Etienne des Rosaies had a busy year dropping EPs for Rekids, Kaoz Theory and his own imprint. He recently joined with the Worldwide family as DJ Deep with his show Open Library, an invitation into the cross section of his music library, exploring soul, jazz, dub, forward thinking electronica and of course house and techno. One highlight from the show was this 1978 soul record from King Errison on Venture Records.

Radio Highlife: Auntie Flo
Track: Ahmed Alshaiba – Smooth Criminal [Self released]

Another new Worldwide FM family member is Glaswegian-born, London based DJ and producer Auntie Flo. Both of his albums, Future Rhythm Machine (2012) and Theory of Flo (2015), have been nominated for Scottish Album of the Year. He brings his Radio Highlife show to us on the back of an amazing set at Worldwide Festival this summer. Named after the label he runs, which has released tracks by Esa, Cain, Alma Negra and Auntie Flo himself, the first show took us on amazing journey across the world before finishing back in Glasgow with album of the month from Golden Teacher.

In this clip we join Auntie Flo toward the end of his show, reflecting on a trip to Morocco when his taxi driver played an old cover of Michael Jackson’s ‘Smooth Criminal’.

Rosie Lowe with Duval Timothy
Track: Duval Timothy – Introvert [Self Released]

London-based singer and producer Rosie Lowe joins the station with a new monthly look into the creative process of different guests and friends. For the first instalment, she was joined by pianist and good friend Duval Timothy. Fresh from releasing Sen Am in October to critical acclaim, Timothy came into chat about his recent trip to Sierra Leone and his creative processes behind the album. The two talked candidly about their creative process in a discussion that showcased why they are two of the most exciting young artists in the UK.

Rush Hour Records In-Store: Kuniyuki (Live)

On 19th October, we returned to Amsterdam for ADE for another all-day in-store at Rush Hour Records. Guests included Louie Vega, Kuniyuki, Esa, Gilb’r, Legowelt, Mount Liberation Unlimited and DJ Okapi. A major highlight was a performance from acclaimed Japanese producer and sound designer Kuniyuki Takahashi. Joining the dots between techno and jazz, Kuniyuki squeezed an ambitious set-up into Rush Hour for his live set including synths, a flute and a wooden frog.

DJ Nuts: Milton Nasciemento Birthday Mix

On 26th October, Brazilian musical icon Milton Nasciemento celebrated his 75th birthday. DJ Nuts possesses one of the most extensive record collections in Brazil, from hip-hop to samba, jazz and disco so he was perfectly placed to put together a special 2 hour tribute mix. He’s released compilation mixes of Arthur Verocai, Brazilian samba rock and Brazilian jazz, funk and rock from 60’s and 70s.

Tina Edwards & Scottie McNiece with Makaya McCraven, Theon Cross and Ben Lamar Gay (Live)
Track: Makaya McCraven, Theon Cross and Ben Lamar Gay – Live Improv

Tina Edwards of EZH mag and Scottie McNiece of International Anthem came together as part of their ChicagoXLondon for a two hour celebration of their jazz cities. They invited drummer Makaya McCraven, multi-instrumentalist Ben Lamar Gay and tuba player Theon Cross for a live set. The trio, made up of musicians from both cities, had never played together before the show, yet they launched into a 40 minute improv live set of deep, arresting music.

WW Nairobi: TAIO with Abaki Simba (Live), Mvroe (Live), EA Wave (Live), DJ coco em
Track: Abaki Simba – Ahangla [ADA Records]

The first Kenya special was hosted in the ADA creative studios in Niarobi. Hosted by TAIO, a renowned local DJ, rapper and founding member of East African super group, Camp Mulla, he was joined by: Abaki Simba, a group of Kenyan Percussionists, acrobars and MCs; EA Wave, a collective fusing electronica, RnB and traditional sounds of their home; and DJ Coco EM, a hip-hop specialist. The show was produced by Mia Zipporah (who has also hosted a WW Tel Aviv broadcast) who has spent the last few months in Niarobi shooting a documentary on the city’s music culture. We join the show at the start of Abaki Simba’s percussion heavy set, where they perform ‘Ahangla’ from their new album Kazi, which translates as “work” in Swahili.

Rush Hour Records In-Store: Nina Kraviz with Kerri Chandler
Track: Uptown Funk Empire – You’ve Got to Have Freedom

Another highlight from our ADE Rush Hour in-store broadcast was an improptu interview between Kerri Chandler and Nina Kraviz. They first met many years ago before Nina became a well known DJ on Kerri’s first trip to Russia. Kerri is a huge inspiration to Nina’s life in music and the two chatted candidly about Kerri’s career and new DJ Kicks compilation. We join the show at the beginning of the interview and it’s followed by ‘You’ve Got To Have Freedom’ by Uptown Funk Empire, which is taken from that comp.
