DJ Gilla hosts two hours of soul, hip hop, jazz and beyond. DJ Gilla is label boss of First Word, home to Tall Black Guy, Souleance, Kaidi Tatham, Yosi Horikawa, Eric Lau, Profusion and many more. He originally started out as a promoter, running seminal nights like Funky Mule and New Bohemia, as well as running shows for acts like Nightmares on Wax, Flying Lotus and our very own Gilles Peterson. As a DJ he is known for his floor-filling combo of soul, hip-hop, jazz (yum).

August’s show features a First Word family summer check-in with contributions from Olivier St.Louis, Children Of Zeus, Essa, Quiet Dawn, Don Leisure and BobaFatt. In the second hour Gilla has put together a mix celebrating The Soulquarians – the loosely affiliated crew led by Questlove, D’Angelo, James Poyser and J Dilla who produced some of the greatest soul and hip-hop records of all time in the late 90s/early 00s.
