Debora Ipekel with Rock Against Racism and Canan Batur
17.12.20Zel Zele co-founder and Turkish crate digger Debora Ipekel shares curious grooves from around the world.
This month, Debora is joined by the members of Rock Against Racism, a political and cultural grassroots movement (1976-82) brining music and musicians of reggae, punk, ska and jazz to empower social cohesion and unity against systematic and cultural racism. This mix is collected and edited by Canan Batur of De La Warr Pavilion, the curator of their upcoming exhibition opening on January 23.
It also includes testimonies by Debbie Golt, Ruth Gregory and Andy Dark and highlight the sound of RAR. Hundreds of small local bands played RAR clubs and gigs, as well as big names like Aswad, Linton Kwesi Johnson, John Cooper Clarke, Au Pairs, Buzzcocks, The Clash, Misty in Roots, The Ruts, The Specials, Gang of Four, Steel Pulse, Tom Robinson Band and X-Ray Spex. The result was a movement which raised the consciousness of a generation. Rock Against Racism takes over the second part of the show playing records and spoken work.
