Classic Album Sundays: Sigur Rós’ Ágætis byrjun

26.08.18

Founded by radio host, music producer, label owner and journalist, Colleen “Cosmo” Murphy, Classic Album Sundays allows listeners to fully immerse themselves into an album by exploring its context, the making of and a full replay of the album on vinyl. This edition focuses on ‘Ágætis byrjun’, the second studio album by Icelandic post-rock band Sigur Rós, noted for its strong social commentary.

Released on Smekkleysa and recorded in 1999, ‘Ágætis byrjun’ is the is the second studio album by Icelandic post-rock band Sigur Rós.

A bold statement on their website at the time of Ágætis byrjun’s release gave a direct insight into Sigur Ros’ mind at the time. To call then “post-rock” would be a genre-bending approach since there were piano, flutes, tremolo, horns, feedback, and inhuman sounding vocal performances that create a sound that cannot really be defined by time or place.

Ágætis byrjun is stand alone record that probably would never have been made in trend-obsessed cities such as London and New York, it’s stark sound is reminiscent in direction of Iceland’s biggest musical export Björk.
