Haseeb Iqbal: Somalia Special with Vik (Ostinato Records)

21.09.19
For this month’s show, Haseeb Iqbal presents a Somalia special, interviewing Vic Sohonie of Ostinato Records, as the pair of them attempt to uncover the story behind Somalia’s thriving disco scene of the 70s. Using the ‘Sweet as Broken Dates: Lost Somali Tapes‘ compilation album as the basis of their conversation, we are given a deep insight into the process Ostinato undertook in unearthing many forgotten gems from the depths of the Somali musical archives.
.
Tracing Somalia’s burgeoning creative scene prior to Barre’s dictatorship, the pair explore a pivotal part of Somalia’s history, often forgotten through the lens of the Western narrative, dissecting the peace and creative energy that enveloped Mogadishu in the 70s and early 80s. We hear about the reggae-infused, South Asian-influenced complexities of the incredibly developed Somali sound.
.
A Grammy-nominated record for Best Historical Album in 2017, we hear of Vic’s experiences in Somalia, assembling this masterpiece from the archives of thousands of different tapes that were buried underground to avoid being bombed, as well as hearing a glimpse of Ostinato’s forthcoming unreleased projects that will be landing in the coming year.
