Hello Skinny with Sibusile Xaba & Thabang Tabane // 05-09-17
Track: Sibusile Xaba & Thabang Tabane – African Rock [WWFM Live Session]

Part of our weekly Drummers Inc series, once a month Tom Skinner hosts two hours of his favourite rhythms and sounds he’s picked up from around the world. Every so often he also welcomes guests who fit with his work as drummer for Owiny Sigoma Band, Sons of Kemet and his own solo work.

In September he welcomed Pretorian guitarist Sibusile Xaba and throat singer Thabang Tabane. They’ve both recently signed to new Johannesburg label Mushroom Half Hour, which draws inspiration from Philip Tabane’s molombo music. During their visit they performed tracks for Sibusile’s debut album Open Letter To Adoniah, including the track African Rock, which has been getting a lot of love on Worldwide FM the last few weeks.

Hello Skinny is due to release an album on Brownswood this Autumn.

Worldwide FM 1st Birthday: Andy Votel’s Niche Market Vol. 2: Typewriter Jazz // 07-09-17

Track: Rolf Liebermann Symphonie – “Les Echanges” Komposition Für 156 Maschinen [EX Records] // Switzerland

Niche by name and niche is the game of Andy Votel’s infrequent but always rewarding series, which hones in on musical topics so under-represented, they barely existed in the first place. Following his first volume on Breton jazz, the Finders Keepers label head turned to his ears to sounds of typewriters, sampled on jazz records, as part of our first birthday celebrations at the beginning of September.

Presented in Andy’s unmistakable approachable charm, he helps make the inaccessible completely accessible.

Worldwide FM 1st Birthday: Thris Tian with Oscar #WorldPeace // 06-09-17

Track: Oscar #WorldPeace – Tate Modern [WWFM Live Session]

Tottenham born MC Oscar #WorldPeace might’ve been brought up to the sounds of neighbours JME, Chipmunk and Wretch 32 but he’s not cut from the same grime cloth. In fact, there’s not much of a grime feel to him at all. Lyrically, he is honest, self-aware and shows a vulnerability rarely seen, speaking candidly about concerns for his family and his own mental health on debut EP Recluse.

During the Worldwide FM first birthday, Oscar joined Thris Tian for a live session, where he performed ‘Tate Modern’.

Catch Thris Tian on Worldwide FM every Friday from 2-6PM.

Gilles Peterson with DJ Harvey // 29-09-17

Track: Tony Esposito – Danza Dell’Acqua [Pikes Records]

Almost single-handed responsible for moulding a club sound that combines balearic, rock, disco and jazz, DJ Harvey is one of the DJing greats of Europe. An illusive character with a lot to say, Harvey stop by for a chat when he was in town for the Ministry of Sound 26th Birthday. He told stories about the early days of Pikes, meetings with Larry Levan and taking his chihuahua for walks along the beach.

Harvey has just released a new compilation, Launching Pikes’ new label. The Sound of Mercury Rising, spanning Harvey’s collection from 1976-2016.

Tony Esposito’s Danza Dell’Acqua is the lead track on the accompanying vinyl sampler, originally released in 1982 on his Tamburo LP, released on Bubble.

Not to be confused by hip-hop royalty, Blaqstar with a “Q” was the guest of journalist Emma Warren this month, for a focus on Baltimore club sounds. The multi-talented rapper, singer, producer and DJ has been instrumental figure in the development of Baltimore club sounds since the early 00s, and he’s well known for a collaboration with M.I.A on her last three studio albums.

Tash with Special Request // 29-09-17

Track: Special Request – Curtain Twitcher [Houndstooth]

Covering for Thris Tian while he was taking in Paris Fashion week, Tash_LC took the reigns for the final New Music Worldwide of the month.

Fresh off the back of his new album for Houndstooth, Paul Woolford aka Special Request joined for a chat and a frenetic jungle set, which he said was one of the most intimidating he’d ever done; clearly more accustomed to a club full of dancers than a much quieter radio studio.

This track Curtain Twitcher is taken from that new album Belief System, out on Houndstooth.

Catch Tash_LC on her regular spot of the fourth Monday of the month and also listen back her amazing interview with Batida.
