  • 23.04.21 Africa Is A Country Radio: Chief Boima - Dakar

Africa Is a Country Radio, the audio accompaniment to the website of the same name, is a monthly deep dive into the music and cultural politics of the African continent and beyond. Hosted by Sierra Leonean-American music producer, DJ, writer, and cultural activist Chief Boima, who is also the managing editor of Africa Is a Country, co-founder of Kondi Band and the founder of the INTL BLK record label. The show features a mix of music and interviews with musicians, historians, journalists, and more. This month we wrap up our theme of port cities, and make a final stop in Dakar, Senegal. A major exit point for Africans during trans-Atlantic slave trade, the former capital of colonial French West Africa, and a central node in the independence movement under the leadership of the poet-president Léopold Sédar Senghor, Dakar is another quintessential gateway between the many worlds that make up the Black Atlantic. Mixing everything, from Cuban rumba to UK drill with an intense pride in local culture and traditions, Dakar is privileged to have one of the most vibrant music scenes on the planet. We explore the sounds of the city and their relationship to recent political protests alongside Dakarois rapper and oral literature researcher, Fehe.
