Africa Is a Country Radio, the audio accompaniment to the website of the same name, is a monthly deep dive into the music and cultural politics of the African continent and beyond. Hosted by Sierra Leonean-American music producer, DJ, writer, and cultural activist Chief Boima, who is also the managing editor of Africa Is a Country, co-founder of Kondi Band and the founder of the INTL BLK record label. The show features a mix of music and interviews with musicians, historians, journalists, and more.

The theme for this season’s Africa Is a Country Radio is port cities. In previous episodes Boima explored the idea of the Black Atlantic and the Black Indian Ocean, and now they visit a city with a unique history that sits at a nexus between those two worlds, Cape Town, South Africa. We listen to the city’s beginnings as a refueling station for the Dutch East India company in the 17th century, through the colonial and apartheid regimes, and up to its role as a 21st century cultural hub.

This month, he is joined by the founder and Editor of Africa is a Country, who is on the faculty of The New School and a Shuttleworth Fellow, Sean Jacobs, editorial board member of Africa is a Country, Dylan Valley who is also a filmmaker and Valmont Layne, a Fellow of the Center for Humanities Research at the University of Western Cape appears courtesy of the To The Best of Our Knowledge podcast.
