In this show Roy Marsh, Jeremy Newall, and Peter Adarkwah tell you who Paul was, how he became the ’The Legendary Paul ’Trouble’Anderson. They trace his life through four decades, from the birth of club culture to his passing. Telling his story and illustrating it with key tracks from each step of the journey.

They also talk about BBE Music’s fond farewell to UK music hero, the Legendary Paul ‘Trouble’ Anderson, with the great man’s final production: a stunning soulful house version of gospel standard ‘Happy Day’ out on the 1st of February.

After opening the shop of the same name, and through this being introduced to all of London’s music hierarchy he soon joined the ranks of the Pioneer’s of London’s Rare Groove movement, originally known on the scene as “The Funky Roach”, and the guy who owned Quaff records. Shows on Studio FM, WBLS London and London’s favourite dance station, Kiss FM, cemented his connection with the rise of club culture as we know it.

With residencies at clubs such as ‘Family Affair’ at the T&C 2 in the late 80’s with Eddie Pillar, before the day’s of Acid Jazz, at Kiss Clubs Spirit & Spice, The Leisure Lounge, Club UK, AOL in Naples, regular slots with Gilles Peterson at Dingwall’s for those legendary Sunday’s, The Volt’s in Exeter, Back to Basic’s in Leeds, Rulin’ at the MOS the list of clubs is endless, along with Sundance Tours throughout Europe, and the rise of Ibiza as a clubbing mecca, where he played all the early clubs, Roy the Roach’s names is recognised through more than four decades of club history.

Jeremy Newall

With a 30 year career that spans record stores to radio stations, nightclubs to studios, magazines to record labels, Jeremy lives for music, buying it, selling it, making it, breaking it, playing it, broadcasting it, curating it, compiling it, promoting it and more!

From 1988 Jeremy has been a trusted music supplier to Paul ‘Trouble’ Anderson from record shops in Soho, including Catch A Groove, Release The Groove and Soul II Soul.

Jeremy guested for Trouble multiple times over the years, most notably becoming the first opening DJ at The Loft in Camden, as well as a back up DJ for Trouble’s legendary ‘Advance Dance’ mix shows on Kiss FM. As well as soulful house grooves, Jeremy has also become a passionate Gospel music collector and DJ, as well as amassing the largest Salsoul Records collection in the world! Jeremy wears many hats, but all brimming with soulful and emotional music.

Peter Adarkwah (BBE)

The Barely Breaking Even (BBE) movement began in 1993 when Peter Adarkwah and Ben Jolly were discussing music and discovered a shared interest in diverse, eclectic sounds covering all genres – from old scratchy Brazilian grooves, through 70’s funk, via jazz fusion, hip – hop and soul to newer garage, disco and techno music.

Since early 2000, Pete has continued to develop the label, taking it to new heights. BBE model’s itself on the motto of ‘real music for real people’ and this is clearly seen by the fact that there are now over 180 compilations and artist albums released, profiling a variety of sounds and styles from funk and soul to disco and Latin as well as house and hip hop and beyond. Compilers from home and abroad have been brought in to add their expertise and in turn the label has aligned itself with many artists as well as genres of music.
