Haseeb Iqbal with Anthony Anaxagorou

18.01.20

Broadcaster Haseeb Iqbal is back for his monthly show. He is joined by poet and writer Anthony Anaxagorou for a chat and a performance.

This month Haseeb is joined by esteemed poet Anthony Anaxagorou. Shortlisted for the most prestigious poetry prize in the UK this year, the T.S. Eliot prize, the pair of us map Anthony’s incredibly fascinating journey, from growing up in North London in the 80s to becoming one of the most important voices in poetry today.

They go on to speak about his experience supporting Akala on tour, his role teaching in schools and prisons, as well as the problems with the education system in making poetry accommodating to all, and how he has gone on to launch his own publication company Out-Spoken.

They deeply examine why the politics is so split in this country right now, and talk of how we can use the arts to bridge the gap between different demographics all across the UK, away from the bubble of solely London. The chat is broken up with music chosen by Anthony throughout, and is followed by a performance of his poem, ‘After the Formalities’, the titled piece from his celebrated new book.
