Tune in for a special show from the Liverpool-based music writer, record collector and DJ, Danny Fitzgerald.

For the better part of the past 8 years he has been focusing his research on Trinidadian calypso music, its roots, and its wider influence in music from American jazz to West African highlife. The culmination of this has been two compilation albums produced for Soul Jazz Records: Calypso: Musical Poetry In The Caribbean 1955-69, which presented an overview Trinidadian calypso recorded at home and in Britain, plus related music from Jamaica, The Bahamas, and Panama; and Nigeria Freedom Sounds: Popular Music And The Birth Of Independent Nigeria 1960-63 which examined a cross-section of styles including calypso, highlife, mambo, juju, apala, and more. In both cases he provided access to rare recordings and wrote extensive liner notes.

For part two, Danny will be taking us to ‘The Golden Age – Post-war calypso, Windrush era’ in the early 1970s.
