Kokoroko

Joining Gilles Peterson this week is the London based 8-piece Afrobeat band Kokoroko. Led by trumpeter Sheila Maurice-Grey and fronted by an all-female horn-section, the band infuse inspirations from Fela Kuti, Ebo Taylor and Tony Allen to create new school Afrobeat grooves, bringing a taste of West Africa to Stoke Newington.

Deirdre O Callaghan

One of the original curators of pop culture magazine Dazed and Confused, Deirdre O Callaghan has been photographing high profile musicians ranging from U2 to Gangstarr, and makes artwork and press for all the major record labels. Her pioneering book, The Drum Thing is a masterpiece of photography and interview, showcasing the most important 100 drummers in the world today.

Perry Louis

Perry Louis founded the JazzCotech Dance Group in over a quarter of a century ago, and it is still the only dance group in the UK teaching ‘Oldskool Street-Fusion Jazz Dance’, a niche style which developed in the 80s. He’s also an internationally renowned DJ, spinning records in London’s The Jazz Cafe and The 100 Club, and abroad in Ireland, Japan and Denmark.

Ola Szmidt

Steve Reid InNOVAtion Award winner Ola Szmidt is a groundbreaking multi-instrumentalist and songwriter who sings in both English and Polish. With an impressive variety of instruments and under her command, her music centres around Scandinavian and Eastern Folk traditions, whilst incorporating elements of jazz, soul and ambient.
