05.08.18

“I can’t express enough how much Airto has influenced and directed me
in his journey through music…. “ – Gilles Peterson

Airto Moreira is one of the most iconic figures in Jazz and Brazilian music and has played a pivotal role in global music, well beyond his home continent and generic roots. Sunday 5th Airto Moreira’s 77th birthday, and throughout the day we will be celebrating his legacy on Worldwide FM.

Born August 5th 1941, Airto Moreira’s career has endured over 60 years. As a drummer and percussionist, Moreira has worked with the likes of Hermeto Pascoal, Carlos Santana, George Duke, Miles Davis, Quincy Jones, Paul Simon, with scoring credits for The Exorcist, Apocalypse Now and Last Tango in Paris. Over that time he has become a Grammy award winner and revered across Brazil for his cultural contributions.

Airto lived in the US for 50 years but returned to his homeland to record Aluê. It was while touring the album earlier this year that Gilles Peterson caught up with him at Ronnie Scotts, and the programme features music from this unique event.
