Today we celebrate the birthday of Brazilian bossa nova singer Astrud Gilberto. She is well known worldwide for being the voice of ‘The Girl From Ipanema’, and consolidating the vibrato-less, understated sound of the bossa nova vocal.

Though her sound has become synonymous with the global, outside-in perception of bossa nova, the decision to feature her in Getz/Gilberto was questioned by many musicians in the scene.
